missionexperiences

United Methodist Ministries mission experiences are a combination of hands-on work, educational opportunities, and small-group learning for youth and adults.  UMM believes strongly in educating mission teams on the justice issues so that participants can identify areas in need of change.  UMM mission experiences provide teams the tools and means to make mission happen within their home communities.

Team activities vary, but most include:

  • The Big Garden and food security;
  • Homelessness and working in a shelter;
  • Emergency relief agencies and the systemic issues of poverty;
  • Dismantling racism through interaction at community centers with youth and seniors;
  • Immigration issues and a local free immigration clinic;
  • Access to the arts through public art displays;
  • Health issues and free preventive health measures;
  • Fair Trade and economic justice through a local thrift store.

The length of UMM mission experiences varies from 24 hours to 5 days.  The cost is $10 per person per day, with an additional $15 a night per person for lodging.  These costs are completely distributed to partner agencies and host churches.  This cost does not include the team's food or entertainment activities.

We ask that all teams:

  • Wear closed-toe shoes like tennis shoes during their entire mission experience Sites will not allow team members to participate in activities if wearing open-toe shoes like sandals or flip-flops.
  • Be prepared to do work that may require them to get dirty.  It is a good idea not to wear clothing that holds special memories.
  • Be prompt and arrive at sites on time.  If you are going to be late, please be considerate of the site leader's time and call ahead.
  • Assign one person to be the group photographer and ask permission before taking pictures that may include a client or site staff member.  It is okay to take photos of your group, but remember to be considerate of those who are around you.
  • Have only one "emergency" cell phone on site with them.  All remaining cell phones need to stay in the vehicle or back at the lodging.  Also, ipods and other similar electronic devices are not allowed while at work sites.

We want your team to have an enjoyable experience and hope that this information is helpful in preparing you for your mission experience with us!
